Limitations of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science that emphasizes the development of intelligent machines that think and work like humans.

During World War II, Alan Turing invented the first computer, whose purpose was to break German communication. In 1950, Alan Turin published a paper highlighting and explaining Artificial Intelligence.

CAN MACHINES THINK?

Now, in the 2020s, people are still working on it. They want to make a machine that is intelligent enough to start to think, work, and behave like a human. Artificial Intelligence is making a machine with such intelligence and caliber.

Data is the New Currency

This statement reflects that Artificial Intelligence needs tons of data for proper training to make predictions or decision models. Extensive data is better for the creation of a perfect model.

A considerable amount of data sits in the hands of big firms. Accessing that data for newly developing companies entering the artificial intelligence (AI) race is challenging. The data that they can access are primarily unstructured and raw. Raw data is inconsistent and of poor quality. Significant steps are required to overcome this problem; otherwise, it will create many difficulties for upcoming startups.

Limitations of AI:

1. Lack of Intuition and Judgement

Computers make life easier by doing a great deal, but they work on defined algorithms. Since Artificial Intelligence is not human, it cannot predict the circumstances as perfectly as humans can. A minor change in test cases can create a huge mess.

For instance, they designed an automated car to move forward on a green signal. At some point, a specific signal is not working. Due to technical issues, the officer controls the traffic according to his instructions. In this case, an automated car would fail to predict or make a decision and think for itself. On the other hand, the non-automated vehicle is safer in this scenario. A human can detect the error and work accordingly as the officer instructs.

There is no doubt that machines are better than humans in terms of efficiency, but they cannot replace the human connection that builds up a team.

2. Lack of Creativity

To run a successful marketing campaign, an individual must be creative. Artificial Intelligence cannot simply be creative. Unlike machines, humans can think, feel, and be intuitive, which often guides their decision-making. Artificial Intelligence believes and operates according to the algorithm when it comes to being creative. It can assist in detecting images, recognizing speech, etc. On the other hand, when it comes to originality, Artificial Intelligence cannot match human creativity.

3. Expensive

Cost is one of the prominent factors that limit Artificial Intelligence. Data go through a different process. Data mining, data cleaning to structure it, data storage, and analysis are expensive in energy and hardware use.

Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) is an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. Nowadays, memes are everywhere on social media; GPT -3 can make memes, too. The Meme generator app uses GPT-3. It understands every variation of memes and generates hilarious memes with a few prompts. It is the future of deep learning, and the estimated cost of GPT-3 is approximately $4.6 Million. The updated model that can compete with the human brain is in process and is roughly $2.6 billion. In addition to this, the engineers who operate these kinds of models demand high pay. So, it is challenging for startups to afford this much cost.

Conclusion:

Artificial Intelligence is a product of both science and myth. It is not a new, rather thousands of years old, idea that machines could think and achieve tasks as humans do. Moreover, AI deals mainly with logic. These technologies are implementing long-established cognitive principles of great strength through engineering.
